The Importance of Mental Health

Did you know that, in any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness?  According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, by age 40, about 50% of the population will have, or have had, a mental illness.

When thinking about being healthy, most people will take into consideration factors such as the food they eat and their workout routine, but physical health is only one piece of the puzzle.  It is important to consider your mental health as well.  The term “Mental Health” does not only relate to people with an anxiety disorder or clinical depression, for example.  Its decline can stem from something as simple as a buildup of stress, or grief over a loss.

In today’s busy society it may seem daunting to add something new to your “to-do” list, but improving your mental health doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming.  Below are listed just a few suggestions of how you can stay mentally healthy.

  1. Talk about your feelings and emotions, with friends, family, or a counsellor
  2. Get active regularly
  3. Eat well & stay hydrated
  4. Get your “beauty sleep”
  5. Stressed?  Pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and collect your thoughts
  6. Ask for help
